In a Rudderless Boat
All of us are people in a rudderless boat,
Blown about by the winds of chance
In an uncaring and indifferent universe,
Destined to drown in a sea of death,
Praying in our despair to imaginary gods,
Who would advise us, were they to exist,
That there is nothing above, nothing below,
Except the goodness, care and love
We poor mortals can offer each other.
