For the Children's Sake

They hated each other
With a passion,
Yet lived together
In some fashion
In a marriage - long dead,
Although they shared a bed,
But any love or affections
Were satisfied by
Extramarital connections,
Thus, they lived together
As creatures of habit,
Keeping up appearances
Of the middle class Babbit,
Expounding on the values
Of society and family,
But their marriage,
A calamity.
