The primitive rhythm,
The beat, beat - hit
Of jazz and swing
Are the psyche's 'id'.

The everyday song,
Direct, realistic, light
Bring the 'ego' along.

But opera and symphony
Lift one to heights
And set the spirit free,
Give us the best we know,
For they express in music
The essence of the 'superego'.
